The picturesque natural scenery and the abundance of crystal clear water makes Bohinj a true hotspot for the fishing enthusiasts. Whether a beginner, a demanding fisherman seeking an exclusive experience or highly experienced fly fishermen, you will find suitable conditions to use (or upgrade) your skills to the fullest extent possible and of course to enjoy yourself in the process.
Fishing Seasons and Fishing Grounds
The fishing season in Bohinj starts in the beginning of March and ends in mid November. A special fishing licence is required to catch Huchen on the Sava Bohinjka river, where fishing is possible from the beginning of December and to the mid of February. There are three fishing grounds, where fishing for Huchen is allowed.
Bohinj Lake is suitable for various types of fishing; whereas, Sava Bohinjka and Mostnica rivers are only suitable for certain types of fly fishing. Mostnica is one of the exclusive fishing spots, since it can accommodate only five fishermen per day.
A Fishing Festival and International Fly Tying Meeting is held in Bohinj in late September and early October every year.
What are other useful tips for fishing in Bohinj?
- To go fishing, you will need a fishing licence, which you can buy at several points of sales.
- You can rent and/or purchase the complete fishing tackle.
- You can enhance your fishing experience by hiring a fishing guide.
- You can catch up to three salmonids per day, of which only one can be a grayling.
- You can catch only one salmon per day, which measures at least 50cm in length.
- After catching the maximum allowed number of fish, you must stop fishing.
- Fishing from a bridge is prohibited.
